Portland Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month

How to get Rid of Opossums Around Your Property

No matter where you live, if you have exposure to the outside you have the chance of attracting “nuisance” Portland wildlife. Most often, these creatures are just looking for a safe nesting area that is comfortable, and easily accessible to food and water. While there are dozens of likely suspects, a more common interloper is the Portland Opossum. Opossums are a type of omnivore, known as an opportunistic feeder. This means they will eat most anything Available. Eggs, small invertebrates, baby birds, garbage, fruits, vegetables, Insects, bugs, carrion, small mammals, seeds, pet food, and other Oregon animal feed are on their diet. Store your garbage and animal food in cans or bins with tight fitting lids, pick up unattended pet food, and pick up any ripe product growing in your gardens. Put bird and squirrel feeders out of reach.

Dispose of any brush or debris piles, unnecessary stacks of lumber, over growth, and the like. Be sure to keep the doors to all outer buildings such as your barn, woodshed, or garage shut tight. Repair any gaps or holes in the doors or siding of your home immediately. Opossums are scavengers that can and do live anywhere. They will move into any Portland area that offers safe shelter and accessible food and water. If you hear a unique sound much like the high-pitched squawk of baby birds coming from under your porch or other building, an Oregon opossum has probably decided it is a secure location to nest. If you fear, you have an opossum; look for large piles of dog-sized droppings, and a search out that noxious smell.

Watch for it leaving its home at dark to forage for food. Remember, opossums are marsupials, they do not build nests. Baby opossums often cling to their mother’s body after they have left the pouch. You can set a “live “trap to see what you might catch. If it is an opossum, you will find clearing them out is not so hard even if they have young. If the mother Oregon opossum has decided to have her babies under your porch, it is much easier to relocate them with the help of a Portland professional. Catch it in a live trap or exclusion funnel trap and contact an animal removal service to take it away. You might want to try one of many popular DIY opossum removal/keep away techniques that are popular today. These usually involve making the Oregon opossum’s nesting space as uncomfortable as possible.

Many people claim bright or flashing lights, loud noises, or sonic emitters will work on driving out the nocturnal Portland creatures. There are also commercial repellents, and old-school remedies like ammonia, hot pepper flakes, or mothballs spread throughout the area to drive it away. Let your dog(s) play in the area often, and plan loud outside activities with the kids. Do not allow it to have the sense of security it enjoys in a dark and peaceful environment. Removing easy to reach sources of food and water, keeping bugs down to a minimum, and eliminating trash and debris piles can make the area unattractive to the opossum family and they will leave on their own accord. The trip is to make your home and property a place where no nuisance animal would want to call home! Once you are sure the area is cleared of all Oregon opossums in residence, begin to take preventative steps to avoid re infestation. Clean the area as best you can to eliminate the smell. Remove any trash or debris left by the opossum.
